5 Brilliant Nigerian Artistes I Expected More From

Posted by Temitope Delano on October 5, 2016 in Editorial · 29 Comments

The Nigerian music industry has produced a vast number of artistes. Overtime, we’ve seen so many artistes come and ago. Some have built their legacy and made sure their names would never be forgotten. others had serenaded us with single hits and left the music scenes while others simply didn’t do enough to stand the test.
Below are 5 artistes we felt could have done much more with their careers than they did.
1. Wande Coal
He might have been unfortunate to have been affected with the breakup of Mohits at a time when his career was just picking up after the success of Mushin 2 Mohits. W Ceezy with the golden voice has just not done enough to match his career and often we wondered what could had been. By and large he remains one of the most gifted talents ace producer Don Jazzy has ever worked with and an extremely talented singer but the transition  of his  gift to proper stardom is something that just didn’t materialize.
2. Jesse Jagz
Jargo is one act that we refer to as jack of all master of none. The gifted other half of the Abaga brothers has so much in his arsenal that he just can’t find one to stick with. A master producer, a gifted rapper among other skills, jargo just hasn’t been up to par with his brother M.I . It’s not even for lack of gift rather its lack of efforts. He simply could have done better with his career.
3. Brymo
Another artiste from the chocolate city camp that wowed us with marvelous singing that only Brymo could. For his huge singing abilities his career is a good example of what one could be when there is talent without efforts. After his court case with Chocolate City he tried to pick up from where he stopped with his career but he just didn’t get there. Even he had to admit his career ended in 2013.
4. Chidinma
She rose to stardom after winning the third season of MTN Project Fame West Africa and every one took considerable interest with her. Since her debut song Kedike she has not really been up to par with her perceived talents and we cant help but feel disappointed. our golden girl simply flattered to deceive.
5. D’banj
He really shouldn’t be on this list considering his achievements but we most admit Eja Nla has had a stalled career since his breakup with his business partner and friend Don Jazzy. While his friend the Don has moved from the Mohits saga to create a dynasty with his SMD group and a bunch of exciting kids, Koko Master has hugely disappointed. the GOOD Music deal should have been a stepping stone but in his case it became the start of his downward spiral.

  1. best of all, the are all great

  2. Xcellent !!

  3. Your opinion through the article is as valuable as the “Accept License Agreement” . No one gives a shit

  4. Dammy Krane

  5. D’banj has no business being on this list. That is not just fair to all of his achievements. How much did Don Jazzy paid you?

  6. Hehe..*I laugh in Spanish*
    D’banj. Downward spiral??
Don’t u forget he’s still one of the richest musicians in Nigeria.

    • read well. were was money mentioned? its his music dat has suffered not his cash reserve and the post addressed that

  7. Ur write up was makin sense, then u mentioned d’banj! Dbanj!?..all dis smal bois who started listenin to naija hip hop 3yrs ago tink dey can start writin shi..incase u dnt knw d’banj achieved more feat than he did during his mohit days.., even jazzy wld nt deny that

    • music feats or business feats? when u compare wizkid’s transition to the international scene and d banj’s leap to the international scene which of their careers got considerable improvement music wise? the jury might still be out on wizkid’s case but u can still see how well he’s going. ask your self how much GOOD MUSIC improved d banj

  8. It’s so funny how this so called critics have to put dbanj on every list. But what they fail to realise is that popping up his name all over the place contrary to their agenda just shows how HUGE he really his.

  9. I don’t totally agree with you on brymo tho, success has different definitions

  10. Except 4 brymo,i would say all dose oda artiste v done really well 4 demsef.and mentionin d’banj here is out of place.please show some respect to ur legends.its jst like saying nas or snoop dog are faded cos dey no longer do music like before.

    • The only African artist to win MTV EMA award two times, even if he doesn’t sing again…. Your forefathers no get mouth to call his name among failures. Legend Dbanj…

  11. true say bro,,,,,100% correct….they should seat back and review their careers

  12. Once they write rubbish, they will sha put Dbanj name in order to get comment. Since 2012 or 2013….. You people not tired of Dbanj and don jazzy fight???

  13. TBH This article is baseless and shows that the writer lacks in-depth knowledge of the Nigerian Music industry.. or has she been listening to too much “garbage” songs??

I only agree with the inclusion of Chidinma and D’banj and D’banj has only reached the pinnacle of his career, if you include D’banj on this list and based on the pre-requisites for being on this list, 2face should be included too, hasn’t he also had a time churning out quality stuff and staying on the charts for the pedigree of the song and not the name?

Brymo’s Tabular Rasa was one of the best albums of 2014, I got his Merchant Dealers and Slaves album and it was money well spent. I just started listening to his Klitoris album and I must say Alajo Somolu is my favourite. He has been putting out good music, madam get your facts right

Did you even listen to Wande’s last album??? how is he on the list????

You probably do not listen to rap well enough to know that Jagz is a master of the rap game.. I can’t start mentioning the amount of albums that have sold and the exceptional quality of these albums
His career however has stalleed since his return to chocolate city and I’ve not listened to his new single but please do not say Jagz hasn’t met expectations.

But then again the list was your opinion, this is mine

So I ask: What was your criteria for judging? or perhaps was it a criterium of how many of songs are being played in clubs??
What really is your expectation from these artists? perhaps the need for them to be billed for shows week in week out in Nigeria?
Asa isn’t billed for shows week in week out but we regard her as successful, the same applies to Lagbaja?

So really what are your expectations?

    • Tabula Rasa received generally positive reviews from music critics and consumers. Tola Sarumi of NotJustOk gave the album a perfect rating of 10/10, stating that “the album has so many high points, in English, Yoruba and Pidgin, the production matches the artist’s delivery, evocative, sensual and performed with real instrumentation.”[6] Jim Donnett gave the album 4.5 out of 5 stars and described it as a brilliant compositional effort that was made to evoke one’s senses.[7] Ayomide Tayo of Pulse commended the album’s quality, production and sound, while giving it 4.5 stars out of 5.

Culled from Wikipedia. Even Jim Donnett of Tooxclusive rated it 4.5/5.. Need I say more?

  15. You people will just come here to spill trash. How can you mention D’banj. What else do you want from him? He’s already a legend!, you expecting him to bring Grammy for you yea?
