How Do You Know A Hit Song When You Hear One? Let’s Discuss.

Posted by Jim Donnett on May 24, 2017 in Editorial, HOT!!, Social Views · 34 Comments

There are so many analogies, myths and wild theories on this subject of ‘A HIT SONG’. The music community has adopted a vain culture; and it is such that when an artiste drops a new music material, we’re too quick to adjudge it as a HIT.

Already, Davido and Tekno have announced new ‘hit’ singles scheduled to drop pretty soon. Just as expected, the diehard fans have labeled the posts with comments such as anoda hit comin thru’ ‘100% hit over hit infact and some other vain concocts like that.

But on a more serious note, how can one tell that a song is a hit?

  • Is it because it was produced by Masterkraft, Sarz or Tekno?
  • Is it because the owner is someone called Davido, Tekno or Niniola perhaps?
  • Is it because the likes of Wizkid and Olamide have established themselves with an impressive track record for delivering music hits over time?

How then can someone tell the hit status of a song just by mere listening? How can someone tell a hit potential in a song that was just released today?

Another point to ponder is, is there a deciphering theory/formula that applies to this problem? Let’s say there is, what about the upcoming artistes with sounds that are relatively unfamiliar? Is theirs the same theory/formula that also applies with the top guns? Or will it be reviewed to suit their category standard?

I mean, it won’t be bad this time around to actually figure if Davido’s Fall or Tekno’s Go abi isit Samantha now, is… or rather will actually be a hit.

So to all those who specialize in the artistry of predestined telling, especially in the music and entertainment show business, I oblige you to please share with us, any pointers, signs or indicators that give insight to the revelation of this knowledge.

  1. I know a hit song by d jazz in the background

  2. David o’s fall shld be a hit cos d chorus alone was quite melodious and considering d David o factor I’m quite sure it wld nd tekno’s Samantha shld also be a hit considering tekno’s status right nau

    • A hit song is not about the status of the artist or singer if you can’t hook it on replay then it’s not a hit.. when I first heard dance by Timaya + rudeboy I was hooked immidiately same thing with phynom – slow whyne .. good music is not dependent on the collaboration or producers, you make good music when you inspired.. inspiration is music. Tekno Samantha is not a hit.. davido fall is not a hit I love both artist but those songs are not a hit. When you hear a hit song you know immidiately cuz you’dbe drawn to it.

  6. As a producer i’d say that the lyrics (most esp the chorus) have to be very simple and catchy, you don’t want your listeners trying to think too hard when they’re listening, takes the joy out of it. You want something short catchy and the icing is as CHARLES already stated a dope ass beat. Also you don’t want the song to be too long, 3 minutes tops. this is because DJ’s and radio stations would like to play the song so anything too long wont make it on the radio. It’ll be too much work for the DJ if he/she has to chop and edit the track.

P.S. Check out my sound cloud page for beats and afrobeat remixes!

  9. our human system knows when it hears a good vibration. it is an in born thing. that said when i listen to songs, i have four things i have in mind. FADE …. F…A ….D….E
F is flow….is the flow tight?
A is attitude… what is the attitude of the singer?
D is dissonance… is the song too dissonant(i.e irritating my ear or not)?
E is Emotion. am i falling in love with these sounds
all this has nothing to do with the language spoken is the song. be it hausa, igbo, french, etc.

  10. I hit song is determined by the fans not the artiste itself. No matter the hard work an artiste put in place its the acceptance by the fans that makes a song a hit track. When 9ice recorded Gongo Aso, he never knew it’s going to be a hit track, Terry G Free Madness, Runtown Mad Over You, Wizkid Ojuelegba I can go on and on. No song is predestined a hit track. Release the track first and the fans will determine if its a hit track or not.

  17. any song could be a hit, one thing i know a song can never be a hit without proper promotion.

  18. A song can never be certified a hit until it gets to the audience. The performance and most importantly, the response of the audience towards such music over a short period of time is what makes it a hit.

  27. A ‘hit song’ is a mainly a product of the producer. The artist also has a minimal contribution to it. The likes of P-Square, Tekno, Olamide, Don Jazzy featured, etc is an example of this.
The chorus and the vibes, the jazz, the instrumentals and the lyrics of the entire song has all to add to make a song a hit track.

  28. when we call a song a hit song….is when the artist delivers his best of best seen to the world….
