Wande Coal
Wande Coal is a Nigerian singer and songwriter widely regarded as one of the founding fathers of modern Afrobeats. Known for his distinctive falsetto, effortless vocal range, and ability to blend Afrobeat with R&B, soul, and house influences, he helped lay the sonic foundation for the global Afrobeats sound we know today. Over a career spanning nearly two decades, he has remained one of Nigeria’s most beloved and respected artists.
Born Oluwatobi Wande Ojosipe on October 18, 1985, in Lagos Island, Lagos State, Wande Coal is the first of two children born to Chief Ibukun Olufunto and Mrs. Omolara Oluwayemisi Ojosipe. He attended Staff Nursery and Primary School Ijanikin for his primary education and Federal Government College Ijanikin for secondary school. He later studied at the University of Lagos, where he was pursuing a degree in Curriculum Studies. Like many great Nigerian musicians before him, Wande Coal’s musical journey began in the teenage choir at his church, where he developed both his vocal abilities and his passion for performance. Before music, he had dreams of becoming a professional dancer — and it was his dancing that would ultimately open the door to his career.
In 2006, Wande Coal performed at a campus event at the University of Lagos that was attended by D’banj and Don Jazzy. His performance so impressed them that they contacted him the following day and signed him to Mo’ Hits Records. He quickly became an integral member of the Mo’ Hits collective, featuring on D’banj’s Rundown/Funk You Up album on tracks such as “Loke,” “Tonosibe,” and “Why Me.” He was also a central figure on the Mo’ Hits All-Stars compilation album CV (Curriculum Vitae) in 2007, with his contribution “Ololufe” widely described as one of the greatest love songs ever written by a Nigerian artist.
On April 12, 2009, Wande Coal released his debut studio album Mushin 2 Mo’ Hits (M2M) — a landmark record produced entirely by Don Jazzy that became one of the defining albums in the history of Nigerian pop music. The album featured D’banj, Dr. SID, D’Prince, and K-Switch, and included beloved songs like “Bumper to Bumper,” “Ololufe,” “You Bad,” and “Naughty by Nature.” The reception was extraordinary — at the 2010 Headies Awards, Wande Coal took home a record five awards for the album, including African Artiste of the Year at the 2010 Ghana Music Awards and Best R&B/Pop Single for “Ololufe” at the Hip Hop World Awards. The album cemented his reputation as one of Africa’s finest voices.
Following the dissolution of Mo’ Hits Records in 2011, Don Jazzy formed Mavin Records and Wande Coal joined the new label. He contributed to early Mavin releases and released singles including “The Kick” featuring Don Jazzy (2013). However, reports of tension emerged in 2013 over the single “Baby Face,” and Mavin Records formally announced his departure in November 2013. Wande Coal went on to establish his own independent label, Black Diamond Entertainment.
In October 2015 — six years after his debut — Wande Coal released his sophomore album Wanted through Black Diamond Entertainment. The project featured AKA, 2Face Idibia, Burna Boy, Maleek Berry, and Wizkid, and included hits like “Baby Hello,” “Ashimapeyin,” “Amorawa” (featuring Burna Boy), and “My Way.” In 2016, he released the massive single “Iskaba” featuring DJ Tunez, which became one of the defining club anthems of the year. He continued with “So Mi So” in 2018 and “Again” in 2020 — a song that reminded the industry why he remains one of Nigeria’s finest vocalists.
In September 2020, he released the Realms EP — a 7-track project under a new partnership with indie distributor EMPIRE, featuring Wale on an “Again” remix and tracks like “Naughty Girl,” “Vex,” “Ode Lo Like,” “Check,” and “Ever Blazin.” In 2023, he released his fourth studio album Legend or No Legend on May 18 — a 13-track project featuring Wizkid (“Ebelebe”), Olamide (“Kpe Paso”), T-Pain (“Streets”), and Fireboy DML. “Kpe Paso” won Best Vocal Performance (Male) at the 2023 Headies Awards. In 2024 and 2025, he continued releasing singles including “Promiscuous” (with DJ Tunez and Libianca), “Old Soldier” (with Kel-P), and “Dem Go Pay.”
Wande Coal has remained active and relevant, releasing music consistently and collaborating with the current generation of Nigerian stars. His 2024–2025 singles including “Promiscuous,” “Old Soldier,” and “Dem Go Pay” show no signs of an artist slowing down. He also appeared on Oxlade’s OFA album on “Asunasa” in 2024.
Wande Coal’s impact on Nigerian music is immeasurable. From “Ololufe” — still considered one of the greatest Nigerian love songs ever recorded — to “Bumper to Bumper,” “Iskaba,” “Baby Hello,” and “Ebelebe,” his catalogue spans multiple eras of Afrobeats while remaining distinctly his own. As he himself has said: “Nobody be like Wande Coal” — and nearly two decades in, that remains true.
