Bloody Civilian
Bloody Civilian is a Nigerian singer, songwriter, and record producer widely regarded as one of the most radical and original voices to emerge from the Nigerian alternative music scene. Known for her bold storytelling, self-produced sound, and unflinching feminism, she has earned the attention of global media, a Marvel soundtrack placement, and a deal with Def Jam Recordings — all before releasing her first full album.
Born Emoseh Angela Khamofu in Abuja, Nigeria, Bloody Civilian is originally from Taraba State and grew up moving between Kaduna, Jos, and Abuja in Northern Nigeria — a conservative, military-influenced environment that profoundly shaped her artistry and gave birth to her stage name. The name “Bloody Civilian” is a direct reference to the derogatory term the military uses for ordinary citizens, and a tribute to the resilience required to survive and thrive in that environment. Her father, a former bass guitarist and musical tourist in a band, was one of her earliest musical influences. At just 8 years old, she began writing songs and giving them to her parents. She began teaching herself music production at age 12 using an audio editing app, long before she had access to a professional studio. As a teenager, she produced beats for rappers at school, honing her production skills and developing her musical identity in private. She later relocated urgently from Abuja to Lagos to pursue music professionally.
Bloody Civilian’s professional breakthrough began in 2022 when she released her debut single “How To Kill A Man” — a bold, self-written, self-produced, self-shot, and self-directed track that was an instant statement of intent. The song, born from her personal experience of harassment and the realities of being a young woman in Nigeria, went viral and was hailed by i-D as a “firecracker of a debut single.” It reached #85 on the Official TurnTable Top 100 and held the number 1 position on the TurnTable Top Alternative/Dancehall chart for two consecutive weeks. Later that same year, she collaborated with Rema on “Wake Up,” which was selected as an official soundtrack for Marvel’s Black Panther: Wakanda Forever — earning her Grammy Award recognition when the soundtrack received a Grammy nomination.
In June 2023, Bloody Civilian released her debut EP Anger Management — a 6-track, entirely self-produced solo project with no guest features. The EP was critically praised by The Native, Afrocritik, and NME, who named her an essential emerging artist for 2023. The Guardian Nigeria profiled her as one of the most radical emerging mavericks in Nigerian music. On October 9, 2023, she ranked number 1 on TurnTable’s NXT Emerging Top Artistes chart, and by November 6, 2023, she ranked number 16 on TurnTable’s Artiste Top 100 — a remarkable achievement for an independent act. She subsequently signed to 0207 Def Jam, the UK arm of Def Jam Recordings — the same label that signed Tems and SZA under CEO Tunji Balogun. In January 2024, she was inducted into Apple Music’s Rising Class of 2024 alongside Qing Madi, Odumodublvck, and Tyla. Billboard also named her in their list of 15 Hip-Hop & R&B Artists To Watch in 2024.
In November 2023, she released Anger Management: At LEasT wE tRIED — a fully remixed version of her debut EP, featuring a stellar cast of collaborators including Odumodublvck, Joeboy, Fave, Tay Iwar, JELEEL!, Candy Bleakz, Majeeed, Enny, Ajebo Hustlers, Miraa May, and Lifesize Teddy. The remixed EP showcased her growing network and cemented her status as a central figure in the new wave of Nigerian alternative music. In January 2024, she contributed “Natural Mystic” to the Bob Marley biopic One Love soundtrack. She has been featured across BBC 1Xtra, Kiss Fresh, Vogue, i-D, The Face, FADER, Clash, and performed at Boiler Room TV Lagos, Femme Fest, and Our Homecoming Festival.
Bloody Civilian released “Head Start” in 2024 — described by her as “a vengeance track that’s Afrobeats but low-key Travis Scott coded” — followed by “Ladida” in 2025, both via tooxclusive. She continues to build her presence across Nigeria, the UK, and globally, with BBC Radio 1 and Apple Music 1 support, international festival bookings, and growing editorial playlist placements on Spotify, Apple Music, Amazon Music, and Deezer.
Bloody Civilian represents a distinctly new breed of Nigerian artist — a complete creative who writes, produces, performs, and directs her own work, entirely on her own terms. From a piece of tissue paper in Abuja to a Marvel soundtrack and a Def Jam deal, her ascent is both a personal triumph and a powerful statement for female artists in Nigerian music.
