Game: Liverpool Vs Manchester United
Venue: Anfield, Liverpool, England
Competition : League Match
Hello my favourite people. I am sorry about the lack of communication, it has been due to circumstances beyond my control. I hope you all had a great weekend? Mine was just there because of the result of Man Utd’s last game. But honestly I was satisfied considering the fact that it was an away game against Liverpool and also the team Sir Alex put out for the battle. Before I go into the Liverpool game, let me share my opinions on the preceding league tie which was against Norwich City. The Canaries came into the game with only 1 victory over the Red Devils in 12 games which was as far back as 2005. Well they haven’t been a regular in the EPL. Before the game against Norwich United have been unbeaten in 24 league games in Old Trafford with the Red Devils boasting of 18 consecutive victories. Judging by the name of the opposition Man Utd were in my own opinion going to stretch their already pretty record at home. United have also been on a ‘sick’ goal scoring spree, scoring 71 goals in their last 25 games at home and conceding a miserly 18. So you see sometimes stats could be scary. The game against Norwich however ended 2-0 in United’s favour and the victory stretched the Red Devils’ home run to 25 games unbeaten, and they still remain undefeated this season. I will also be objective about United’s performance, it was far from good and the defence was terrible with poor communication the issue. I will give credit to the Norwich boys and probably a mention to stand in goalkeeper for United Anders Lindergaard for a good performance.
Back to the game in question. Man Utd have not been having it so good in Anfield. They have not won there in the last 3 games. This also the longest run of poor results at Anfield under Sir Alex though the Red Devils still have the bragging rights with 71 victories over Liverpool compared to Liverpool’s 61 over Man Utd. What baffles me really is Man Utd’s poor disciplinary record on this ground. Out of 4 red cards dished out at Anfield in the last 4 games United have received 3 of the 4. There has hardly been any draws in this game since 2005, so I was expecting a goal’s feast. Mr Liverpool (Steven Gerard) has scored 4 goals in this particular fixture, the most by any of the current Liverpool players. Robbie Fowler holds the record for most goals scored against Man Utd by a Liverpool player. He scored 6 times. You can see how goal shy they can be against the best team in England. Just 2 players can boast of an Hatrick against the Red Devils and 1 them is Dirk Kuyt of Liverpool and David Bentley of Spurs (When he was still a Blackburn player). Man Utd have been unbeaten in 11 games in all competitions this season and have scored 34 goals in the process. United have lived up to their never die attitude scoring 5 times in the last 5 minutes of a game in 5 games this season. United striker Wayne Rooney, who is Liverpool born and bred but an Evertonian at heart has not scored against Liverpool in Anfield since January 2005. But he is still the key man for the Red Devils, having scored 9 league goals already.
The Reds as Liverpool are fondly called have their talisman back (Gerard), which means they have a fully fit squad to select from. Gerard had been out for 7months picking an injury in the 3-1 victory over United in March. Kenny Dalglish started with Pepe Reina (I regard him as the best goalkeeper in the EPL), Kelly, Skrtel, Caragher, Enrique, Adam, Lucas, Downing, Gerard, Suarez and Kuyt in a 4-3-3 formation. Man Utd still had a couple of players out (Rafael and Cleverly) with Vidic back but the Gaffer had other ideas as regards his starting XI. Seeing the starting line up sent shivers down my spine. He benched ‘KEY PLAYERS’ like Rooney, Nani, Valencia, Anderson and Chicharito. As always I will drop my favourite line, ‘Sir Alex knows best’. United’s starting XI consisted of DeGea, Smalling, Ferdinand, Evans, Evra, Phil Jones, Fletcher, Young, Giggs, Park and Welbeck in a 4-5-1 formation in my view.
The game kicked off in rush, with both sides trying to break each other in quick counter moves. The possession was balanced but it looked like Liverpool slightly had the edge. The Red Devils came close to scoring after a cross from Evra was met by Jones who couldn’t put his header on target. In the 34th minute Luis Suarez could have easily scored for Liverpool after he was alone with only De Gea to beat but he shot straight at the United goalie. The 1st half finished goalless and Liverpool looked the better side.
The 2nd half kicked off just like the 1st as both sides searched earnestly for a goal. Ashley Young almost got a goal from a free kick but Reina fumbled with the shot, there was no other United player on hand to attack the rebound, as the Spanish goalkeeper made a double save. Liverpool however got a deserved goal after Ferdinand interrupted goal bound Charlie Adam outside the Red Devils’ box. Gerard took the freekick and scored but the most experienced player(Giggs) on the pitch should take the blame for the goal. He opened up the wall which the ball went through. United searched for an equaliser but it didn’t look forthcoming. Fergie sent on Rooney and Nani for Park and Young respectively in the 69th minute and their impact was felt immediately but still no goal yet. Chicharito came on for Phil Jones. At this point I was wondering what Ryan Giggs was still doing on the pitch. Man Utd however got an equaliser through sub Chicharito after a Nani corner was sent to his path through a Danny Welbeck header in the 81st minute. Game on. Both sides looked for the winner. Kuyt and Henderson who had come for Liverpool came close to winning it late for Liverpool but Degea who has received criticisms from left, right and center thwarted both efforts to hand United a draw. Game ends 1-1. To be fair, Liverpool deserved all 3 points.
Man of the match for me was David Degea with four GREAT saves. Liverpool fans would see Stewart Downing as the flop of the game but with all due respect I will hand it to Messr Giggs. Next up is Otelul Galati in the UCL and Man City in the league. So help us GOD.
