Game: Schalke FC Vs Manchester United
Venue: Veltins-Arena, Gelsenkirchen, Germany
Competition : UEFA Champions league ½ final, 1st leg
Hey people, I guess you all are fine. I had a great weekend and I am sure Chelsea fans too did especially after the £50m man scored his 1st goal for the club in the 3-0 drubbing of Westham. Over 900mins without a goal for both club and country. Heard he vowed not to score till after easter. I believe Arsenal fans are left to taking jibes at their local rivals Spurs(they might not make it to the champions league next season) and also watch their backs because Man City might just nick 3rd spot off them. Okay nuff said, United are in Germany to face Schalke FC in the champions league semi-final match. Man Utd is 2games away from a Wembley final.
I was expecting the restoration of Giggs, Evra and Carrick(Yes I know I said it) into the starting line up after the little rest over the weekend. Sir Alex started Van Der Saar, Fabio, Rio, Vidic, Evra, Valencia, Giggs, Carrick, Park, Rooney and Chicharito. I was kind of shocked with Nani left out but Park has got what it takes to hold his position. My only fear about the Schalke side was Raul Gonalez Blanco. Who had scored 71 goals in 142 Champions league before tonight’s game. A legend in all fairness. Schalke have other quality players in Farfan, Metzelder, Jurado and they have a goalkeeper Sir Alex has had his eyes on for a while (Manuel Neuer).
The game starts with United kicking off. United came close to scoring as early as the 3rd minute when Rooney forced Neuer to make a great save. Park also forced a save from the Schalke keeper in the 6th minute and I was beginning to believe we would leave Germany with an away victory. United were creating chance after chance but Neuer was amazing in goal. Efforts from Chicharito, Rooney, Giggs and Park were thwarted by the young German, Schalke had chances of their own but not something of a bother to the United defence. The game flowed freely with not much fouls. Both sides were unable to break the deadlock and the 1st half ended goalless. I must say it was Man Utd versus Neuer in this half. Rooney was his usual self setting the tone for most of United’s attacks.
The 2nd of half started with United continuing from where they stopped in the 1st half. Creating more chances but not being able to score. Too many chances given away and I am like will this game end in a draw. Rooney was troubling the Schalke defence as always setting up chances for his team mates but none buried. Then the moment came in the 67th minute where Rooney got a pass from Evra who has been so impressive all through. Rooney in turn set up Ryan Giggs who buried the ball under the on rushing Neuer to give United their 1st goal. I was ecstatic and hit my already hurting shin against the table. I didn’t know I was gonna drop my laptop in less than 2 minutes when Hernandez set Rooney up for United’s 2nd goal. As a precaution Sir Alex had to take off Chicharito, Park and Rooney because of the game against Arsenal on Sunday and brought in Anderson, Scholes and Nani. United wasted chances to be honest with Ryan Giggs being the main culprit(he had the clearer chances). I was so glad with the away victory. The referee was fantastic, he let game flow without blowing his whistle too often.
United still have not conceded an away goal in the champions league this season and have won 12 of their last 13 away ties. A foot in Wembley already for Man Utd. Man of the match for me was Wayne Rooney but can’t help but mention Michael Carrick who was at his best and the entire United backline. Neuer in goal for Schalke was brilliant and made sure Schalke didn’t concede up to 7 goals. Next stop is the Emirates stadium for United and victory will push us close to the league title.
Thanks as always for your time……………. Bless
