Rema Performs ‘Calm Down’ in an Exclusive Royal Palace Show for the Oba of Benin

Rema Performs 'Calm Down'

Arriving in his cherished hometown of Benin, Edo State, just days before his long-awaited homecoming concert, Rema performs ‘calm down’ at the Royal Palace Show for the Oba of Benin.

Afrobeats star Divine Ikubor, known as Rema, made a powerful return to his roots with a tribute celebrating Benin’s cultural pride. His visit to the palace of His Royal Majesty, Uku Akpolokpolo Oba Ewuare II, generated widespread admiration throughout the city. Arriving in his beloved hometown of Benin, Edo State, just days before his eagerly anticipated homecoming concert, Rema sought to reconnect with his heritage and honor those who came before him.

The concert, scheduled for August 30 at the renowned Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium, had been announced in July, igniting excitement across the country. Rema’s journey was more than a musical event; it was a celebration of the land that shaped his life. During his visit, he met with the Governor of Edo State, Godwin Nogheghase Obaseki, and mingled with the city’s elite, expressing gratitude to those who supported his rapid rise.

The highlight of Rema’s return was his visit to the Oba of Benin’s palace, where Rema performs ‘Calm Down’ in a deeply respectful manner. Kneeling and bowing, Rema showed his profound connection to his cultural identity. With the royal blessing, Rema was granted permission to perform his hit song, “Calm Down,” in the palace’s sacred space. As Rema performs ‘Calm Down’ the atmosphere was electric, with everyone—from the royal court to the guests—joining in and singing along.

This collective performance of “Calm Down” created a vibrant celebration of unity and festivity, underscoring Rema’s deep ties to his heritage. Watch video here

Meanwhile, Rema recently discussed his high-profile performance at the wedding of Anant Ambani, the son of India’s wealthiest man, Mukesh Ambani, and Radhika Merchant, daughter of pharmaceutical magnates Viren and Shaila Merchant.

Rema had previously made headlines with reports claiming he was paid $3 million (around N4.5 billion) for the event. In a new interview with GRM Daily, the “Calm Down” hitmaker shared his thoughts on the experience, though he did not confirm or deny the exact amount he was paid. When asked about the $3 million payment, Rema responded with a laugh and said:

“Hehehe, that is all I can say to be honest. Financially, it was a great achievement, and the experience was beautiful. I love India, and India loves me too. It feels amazing to benefit from something that people once trolled and criticized me for. It’s a testament to not giving up despite the negativity. Four years later, it paid off big time.”

Related, in an interview with GRM Daily’s “Thoughts In A Culli,” hosted by Post, who is also the CEO of GRM Daily, Rema, whose sophomore album HEIS continues to make waves, discussed his career, personal life, and his place in the Afrobeats genre. When asked about his approach to competing with Afrobeats icons and being considered part of the new “Big Four” alongside Wizkid, Burna Boy, and Davido, the 24-year-old artist emphasized his respect for his peers and his lack of interest in rivalry.

Rema explained that he doesn’t allow himself to be influenced by fan-driven comparisons between artists. Instead, he focuses on his own growth and music. Reflecting on his journey, he mentioned that he didn’t know Wizkid, Burna Boy, or Davido five years ago, so he sees no reason to be overly concerned with competing against them now that they are peers.

He further remarked that while songs might create perceptions of competition, he views it as a healthy part of the industry and believes that outside of music, there should be mutual respect and support among artists.
