It was a night dedicated to the memory of one of the greatest music icons of recent times, Whitney Houston. This week’s edition of the Etisalat sponsored Nigerian Idol reality show was a celebration of late American R&B superstar Whitney Houston and each of the contestants rendered a performance of a song done by Whitney when she was alive. Many members of the audience were taken down memory lane as many of Whitney Houston’s hit songs from the 80s down to the 90’s were sung by one contestant after the other.
The Head of the youth segment Etisalat Nigeria, Mr. Elvis Daniel said that these performances took a lot out of the contestants mainly due to the fact that most of Whitney’s songs are particularly difficult to sing. Nevertheless, he stated that the contestants did a great job of honoring her memory. He stated that at this stage the competition can only get stiffer and that in order to keep the best contestants in the house, Nigerians need to vote adding that there is no limit to the number of times one can vote for a contestant or set of contestants.
Guest Judge on the show, Lara George also commended the contestants for their efforts in performing the songs of the late artiste. She reiterated the fact that Whitney Houston’s songs are very difficult to pull off and that it takes incredible skill to achieve her high notes.
Shortly after the show, the contestants who had been previously evicted from the house were treated to a farewell party where they were celebrated by the whole Nigerian Idol crew for being a part of the show and for making it this far in the competition. Ibinabo Romeo, one of the evicted contestants said that she was sad to be leaving the show but that she had learnt so much during her stay in the Nigerian Idol house.
