In the face of fierce criticism from Muslims, Professor Wole Soyinka has defended award-winning celebrity musician Davido.

The famous author contributed his voice to the viral video of several incensed teenagers protesting against a music video that Davido endorsed because they felt it was disrespectful to their religion on the streets of Maiduguri, the capital of Borno State.
Soyinka provided justifications for why Davido shouldn`t apologise to them in a statement made public on Tuesday.
He mentioned how Nasir El Rufai, a former governor of Kaduna State, had made disparaging remarks towards Christians in the past but had never been required to apologize.
βThere was nothing to apologize about, and that applied equally to El Rufai`s comments at the time. It should come as no surprise that I equally absolutely disagree with Shehu Sani, if indeed, as reported, he has demanded an apology from Davido ok behalf of the Muslim communityβΒ he noted.
The famous author also referenced moments from Whoopi Goldberg`s SISTER ACT and pointed out that Deborah Yakubu, a second-year Christian college student who was murdered by a mob of Muslim students in Sokoto last year over allegations of blasphemy, wasn`t killed because of Davido`s music.
Nigerians should learn to discern between practitioners and the objects of their devotion, according to Soyinka.
