Afrobeats artist Stanley Omah Didia, better known as Omah Lay, has opened up about the positive impact his time in an Ugandan prison has had on his personal and professional life. Reports indicate that Omah Lay and fellow artist Tems were arrested, charged, and imprisoned in Uganda on December 12, 2020, for holding a concert at Speke Resort in Kampala that violated COVID-19 social distancing regulations.
After spending three days in custody, they were released on bail. In a recent interview with Amazon Music, Omah Lay discussed how this experience dramatically changed his perspective on freedom. He expressed that his time in jail deepened his appreciation for freedom, a sentiment that now resonates through his music.
“After being in that cell for three days, I just love my freedom so much now that I fight for it with every record… I don’t want to give Uganda so much credit for locking me up, but that shifted my perspective about freedom,” the artist behind ‘Soso’ remarked.
