Afrobeats artist Seun Kuti sparked a conversation by questioning the salaries of footballers, highlighting the disparity between their earnings and those of essential workers.

He pointed out that during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, society functioned without footballers, while essential workers played a crucial role in keeping everyone safe. Seun believes it’s unjust for the salaries of footballers to be so high, especially when many young boys in his community play football without any pay.
βCollecting millions to chase ball around field, footballers are making millions weekly. Why should footballers be paid better than nurse and doctors? Itβs not fair β Seun said.

The singerβs statement follows remarks by Rodri, a midfielder for Manchester City, who warned about a possible strike among footballers. Rodri stated that players across Europe believe a strike is the right course of action if the crowded schedule doesnβt change. This further fueled the debate on the salaries of footballers and their impact on the sport and society.
