Ruger
Ruger is a Nigerian singer-songwriter and performing artist known for his distinctively sweet voice, dancehall-influenced sound, and his trademark eyepatch. One of the fastest-rising stars in Afrobeats, he went from an unsigned artist to a global name in under three years, earning critical acclaim and a fiercely loyal fanbase across Africa, the UK, and beyond.
Born Michael Adebayo Olayinka on September 23, 1999, in Lagos State, Ruger is originally from the Yagba West Local Government Area in Kogi State, Nigeria, and is of Yoruba heritage. He grew up in Lagos, where he developed an early love for music — singing in his church choir and his school’s music band from a young age. He attended Police Secondary School in Akure and graduated in 2017. From his high school days, he was already writing songs and performing at school events, adopting the stage name Ruger before he had even signed a deal. His musical influences include Bob Marley, Rihanna, Boyz II Men, and Beyoncé. His signature eyepatch, which has become one of the most recognisable looks in Nigerian music, is worn in honour of someone who lost an eye but kept going.
Ruger’s big break came when he was discovered by D’Prince — brother of Don Jazzy and head of Jonzing World Records — who gave him his stage name and signed him to the label. In January 2021, D’Prince announced the signing of Ruger to Jonzing World in a joint venture with Sony Music Entertainment UK and Columbia Records. His debut single “One Shirt,” featuring Rema and D’Prince, was released on January 20, 2021, and immediately generated buzz. Weeks later, he dropped the self-titled single “Ruger” in February 2021, which further confirmed his arrival.
In March 2021, Ruger released his debut EP, Pandemic — a 6-track project fully produced by Kukbeatz. The lead track “Bounce” went viral almost immediately, topping Apple Music charts in Nigeria and several other African countries and clocking 70 million views in three days. The EP established Ruger as one of the most exciting new voices in Afrobeats. Later that year, in November 2021, he released his sophomore EP The Second Wave, also produced by Kukbeatz. Its lead single “Dior” peaked at number 32 on the UK Top 50 and number 15 on the UK Afrobeats Singles Chart, giving Ruger his first significant international chart placement.
In November 2022, Ruger released “Asiwaju,” which shot to number 1 on Nigeria’s Apple Music chart and held the position for a record-breaking one month, accumulating over 100 million Spotify streams by mid-2024. The song became one of the defining Afrobeats records of the year and served as the lead single to his debut studio album. In February 2023, he was named Best New Artiste at the Soundcity MVP Awards. His debut album Ru The World, released in September 2023, was a 17-track project featuring Stefflon Don, Sauti Sol, Govana, Projexx, and Jugglerz, and received widespread critical praise — rated 8.1/10 by Pulse Nigeria who called it a “Champion” project.
In 2024, Ruger made a bold move, exiting Jonzing World to launch his own imprint, Blown Boy Entertainment, signalling a new era of creative independence. That same year, he teamed up with BNXN (fka Buju) — despite a very public online feud in 2023 — to release the joint 7-track mixtape RnB in April 2024, which was praised for the chemistry between the two artists. He continued releasing singles in 2024–2025 including “Make Way,” “Luv Again,” and collaborations with Maleek Berry.
Ruger has remained prolific as an independent artist under Blown Boy Entertainment, releasing new music and growing his international profile. He has toured North America and Europe extensively, performing at sold-out shows and major festivals including Afro Nation Portugal. His collaboration with Maleek Berry on “Lately” and singles like “Make Way” and “Luv Again” have kept him at the forefront of the Afrobeats conversation heading into 2025.
In just a few years, Ruger has carved out one of the most distinctive identities in modern Afrobeats — a blend of dancehall melody, slick delivery, and deeply personal songwriting wrapped in an instantly recognisable image. He represents a new generation of Nigerian artists who are equally comfortable topping local charts and making noise on the UK and global stage.
