Patoranking
Patoranking is a Nigerian reggae-dancehall singer and songwriter widely celebrated for fusing Jamaican dancehall rhythms with African fuji, Afrobeats, and soul. With a catalogue of anthems spanning over a decade, he has established himself as one of Africa’s most distinctive and beloved voices in the reggae-dancehall space, with influence stretching from Lagos to Jamaica to North America.
Born Patrick Nnaemeka Okorie on May 27, 1990, in Ijegun-Egba Satellite Town, Lagos State, Patoranking has family roots in Onicha, Ebonyi State. He grew up in a modest household, sharing a single room with his parents and five siblings in the Ebute Metta community. He attended Citizen Comprehensive College in Epe, Lagos, and later Jibril Martin Memorial Grammar School in Iponri. He gained admission to the University of Cape Coast in Ghana in 2007 but dropped out due to financial constraints. During his time in Ghana, he moved to Osu, Accra, where he met an entrepreneur called Lanky who signed him to Black Rhythmz Entertainment — his earliest record deal. His musical influences include Buju Banton, Bob Marley, Fela Kuti, Lucky Dube, Chaka Demus, and Majek Fashek.
Patoranking returned to Nigeria and joined K-Solo’s Igberaga Records in 2012, recording “Iya Bisi” featuring Qdot and Kbaj — a dancehall-fuji fusion that introduced him to local audiences. He released several other early singles including “Tonight,” “Park Well,” and “So Nice.” His stage name was given to him by a Jamaican artist he met at Alpha Beach, Lagos. In February 2014, he signed with Foston Musik, which became the launchpad for his mainstream breakthrough.
His defining moment came on September 12, 2013, with the release of “Alubarika” featuring Timaya — a song he described as a summary of his life as a musician. It opened doors across Nigeria and earned him a growing fanbase. In February 2014, he released “Girlie O,” produced by WizzyPro, which shot to No. 9 on MTV Base’s Official Naija Top 10. The Tiwa Savage-assisted remix of “Girlie O,” released in May 2014, was even more explosive, winning him the Headies Award for Best Reggae/Dancehall Single and the Headies Next Rated award that same year.
Following the success of “Girlie O,” Patoranking became a household name with a run of smash hits including “My Woman My Everything” (featuring Wande Coal), which won Best Afropop Song at the tooXclusive Online Music Awards 2015, and “No Kissing Baby” featuring Sarkodie. He signed a distribution deal with VP Records in February 2015 and subsequently with Amari Musiq. In 2016, he won Best New Act at the MTV Africa Music Awards and Best Dancehall Artist at AFRIMA, and Best African Artiste of the Year at the Vodafone Ghana Music Awards. His 2017 single “Love You Die” featuring Diamond Platnumz became another Pan-African hit, and Forbes Africa named him to its 30 Under 30 class for 2020.
Patoranking has released four studio albums: God Over Everything (2016), Wilmer (2019), Three (2020), and World Best (2023). His tooXclusive album review for Wilmer rated it 8.5/10, calling it proof of his “versatility and effortlessness at making really good music.” He has also toured extensively alongside Ms. Lauryn Hill and launched the ALU Patoranking Scholarship, offering 10 scholarships for African students to attend the African Leadership University.
Patoranking has remained consistently active, releasing “Abobi” (2023), “Babylon” featuring Victony (2023), “Higher” (2023), “Devil Wears White” (2024), “Credit Alert” (2024), “So Bad (Sober)” (2024), “No Jonze” (2025), and “Grateful” featuring the Soweto Spiritual Singers (2025). He also appeared on Rema and Mohamed Ramadan’s collaboration in 2025, further cementing his pan-African relevance.
Patoranking’s music bridges the gap between Nigerian street culture and Caribbean dancehall in a way few artists have managed. From the slums of Ebute Metta to the Billboard Reggae Albums chart, he has built one of the most authentic and enduring careers in modern African music, using his platform to inspire youth, champion education, and celebrate African identity.
