Temilade Openiyi, known professionally as Tems, was born on June 11, 1995, in Lagos, Nigeria. She grew up in a family that appreciated music, and this influenced her love for singing and writing songs. Tems attended Dowen College in Lagos before moving to South Africa for her tertiary education.

Music Career

Tems’ music career began in earnest in 2018 when she released her debut single “Mr Rebel,” which garnered significant attention. She gained further prominence with her 2019 single “Try Me,” which became a hit in Nigeria and beyond.

In 2020, Tems was featured on Wizkid’s track “Essence,” which achieved international acclaim and topped various charts. The success of “Essence” helped her gain recognition on a global scale.

Tems’ debut EP, “For Broken Ears,” was released in September 2020 and received critical acclaim for its unique sound and lyrical depth. Her follow-up EP, “If Orange Was A Place,” released in 2021, solidified her position as one of Africa’s most promising new artists.
