Nigerian music legend Onyeka Onwenu, 72, died on the night of Tuesday, July 30, at Reddington Hospital in Lagos. Onwenu had been attending a birthday celebration where she performed on stage. Following her performance, she collapsed and was quickly taken to the hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
The exact cause of her death has not yet been confirmed. Born on May 31, 1952, Onwenu’s illustrious career spanned over 40 years. She was celebrated not only as a singer and songwriter but also as an actress, journalist, and politician. Her debut album, In The Morning Light, was released in 1984 with Polygram.
Her notable hits include “One Love,” “Iyogogo,” and “Ekwe.”
