Shaboozey's 'Tipsy'

Shaboozey’s ‘Tipsy’ has been the longest-running #1 single of 2024 on the Hot 100, standing for seven weeks.

Nigerian-American artist Shaboozey has achieved a new milestone in the music industry with his track “A Bar Song (Tipsy).” The song has set a new record by becoming the most streamed track in the United States for 2024, according to Chart Data. This achievement marks a significant moment in Shaboozey’s career, reflecting his growing influence and popularity in the global music scene.

Shaboozey’s ‘Tipsy’ has outpaced other notable tracks, including Kendrick Lamar’s “Not Like Us” and Benson Boone’s “Beautiful Things,” establishing itself as the top-selling single in the US this year. Additionally, Shaboozey’s ‘Tipsy’ has made a notable impact on the Hot 100 chart, becoming the longest-running number one hit of 2024, holding the top spot for seven consecutive weeks. This remarkable run also includes surpassing Post Malone and Morgan Wallen’s “I Had Some Help,” further cementing Shaboozey’s status in the industry.

Shaboozey’s accomplishments extend beyond this single success. In July, he made history by becoming the first Black artist to top both the Hot 100 and the Hot Country Songs charts simultaneously, a feat he achieved alongside BeyoncΓ©. This achievement highlights Shaboozey’s ‘Tipsy’ versatility and broad appeal across different music genres.

Despite his impressive success, Shaboozey’s career has recently been marred by controversy involving his record label and marketing firm. Reports surfaced last week that his marketing firm was engaged in creating misleading stories about artists to gain viral attention. This revelation has added a layer of complexity to Shaboozey’s current situation, raising questions about the integrity of his promotional efforts.

Compounding the issue, Shaboozey, whose real name is Collins Obinna Chibueze, is embroiled in a legal dispute with Warner Chappell and his former label, Kreshendo Entertainment. According to Billboard, on August 21, Shaboozey filed a lawsuit against Warner Chappell, alleging that the company is obstructing his efforts to exit a publishing administration deal. He claims that Warner Chappell’s actions are influenced by Kreshendo, despite his formal departure from the label years ago.

In response, Kreshendo countersued Shaboozey on August 23, asserting that they retain significant rights to his music following his exit in 2019. The label accuses Shaboozey of employing a “strategy of fraud and misrepresentation” to deny them their contractual rights. Kreshendo’s lawsuit claims that Shaboozey initially had no issues with the terms of their agreement and that his sudden disputes over these terms have arisen only after the success of “Tipsy.”

β€œNotably, Shaboozey had no issue with any of these terms for years,” the company’s attorneys stated. β€œIt was only after he recently released the β€˜Bar Song,’ which has become a huge hit, that he has taken sudden issue with the terms he expressly agreed to.” The countersuit further alleges that one of the stipulations was that Kreshendo would own a 50% stake in all of Chibueze’s compositions and retain a share of the profits from his music masters.

The complaint outlines that Kreshendo invested time and resources into developing Shaboozey when he was an emerging artist, helping him achieve the success he enjoys today. The lawsuit accuses the musician of failing to honor the financial terms of their agreement, which has led to the current legal conflict.

This legal battle highlights the challenges and complexities faced by artists as they navigate their careers and relationships with labels and management. Despite the ongoing disputes, Shaboozey’s success with “Tipsy” remains a significant achievement in his career, underscoring his growing influence and popularity in the music industry.
