In an interview with GRM Daily’s “Thoughts In A Culli,” hosted by Post, who is also the CEO of GRM Daily, Rema, whose sophomore album HEIS continues to make waves, discussed his career, personal life, and his place in the Afrobeats genre. When asked about his approach to competing with Afrobeats icons and being considered part of the new “Big Four” alongside Wizkid, Burna Boy and Davido, the 24-year-old artist emphasized his respect for his peers and his lack of interest in rivalry.
Rema explained that he doesn’t allow himself to be influenced by fan-driven comparisons between artists. Instead, he focuses on his own growth and music. Reflecting on his journey, he mentioned that he didn’t know Wizkid, or Burna Boy and Davido five years ago, so he sees no reason to be overly concerned with competing against them now that they are peers.
He further remarked that while songs might create perceptions of competition, he views it as a healthy part of the industry, and believes that outside of music, there should be mutual respect and support among artists.
