“I’m More Comfortable in Yoruba” — Asake Speaks on Authentic Music-Making

Asake on Why He Chooses Yoruba: “My Story Is Best Told in My Language”

Asake has opened up about why he chooses to make music primarily in his native language, Yoruba — and his explanation is both powerful and deeply personal.

Speaking with ESSENCE, he shared that while he can communicate and sing in English perfectly well, his artistry is rooted in authenticity. His music comes from his lived experiences, his upbringing, and the cultural elements that shaped him. Because of that, Yoruba becomes the most natural and honest way for him to tell his story.

He explained:
“It’s not like I can’t communicate in English… I think I can actually talk to the whole world in English or probably sing to the whole world in English. But because my music is based on my own story and my own journey and the stuff that shapes me… I think I’m more comfortable to say it in Yoruba.”

Asake’s words highlight a universal truth for many artists: true connection often comes from embracing one’s roots. His use of Yoruba isn’t a barrier — it’s a bridge, allowing the world to experience his story exactly as it was lived.
