New York-based jazz/afrobeats musician, UDEiGWE, has unveiled the official music video for his latest single “Do”, a mood-lifting brass-laced track featuring the legendary SKALES. The song starts with UDEiGWE’s usual warm vocal styling, transitions to a rapid-fire rap verse by SKALES, and culminates in a short friendly duet between the two as UDEiGWE sings out the track with a scat.
The music video is a film commentary on a competition-driven culture where, according to the artist, “everybody can do, but not be everybody fit do”. The costume and set colours spell African creativity and artistic freedom, while the choreography outlines an evolution of Nigerian dance, spanning from the Kalakuta queen body twist through today’s legwork moves.
Outside of music, UDEiGWE, whose full name is Lawrence Udeigwe, is also a trained mathematician and currently an Associate Professor of Mathematics at Manhattan College in New York and Affiliated faculty at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).
